Troop T-shirts – Sizing information (5-7-10)
Please send to me (Stephen Gassaway) your son’s T-shirt size so we can order an appropriate amount of activity shirts for daily use at the jamboree. Each participant will receive 3 T-shirts, so wear them well and wash them often! This shirt cost was already covered in your Jamboree dues. No additional funds needed. If you don’t tell me your size I will have to guess and you might end up with an XXXL because I am a conservative guesser.
Troop Hats – Upon request (5-7-10)
We will be ordering troop jamboree hats at about $10 each. They are baseball style caps which can be used throughout the jamboree. Please let me know if you are interested in getting a hat.
*** Special note- only jamboree approved hats are to be worn during the jamboree. The standard jamboree hats will be for sale at the jamboree kiosks, so you can still get a jamboree hat even if you don't get the troop jamboree hat. You can order one online in advance of the jamboree too. However, they are probably more expensive than our troop jamboree hats.
Troop Meetings are now mandatory! (5-7-10)
Per decree from Scoutmaster Paul Cochran, all scouts are required to attend all remaining troop meetings. You must seek approval directly from Mr. Cochran if you feel that your son will not be able to attend a meeting. In Paul’s own words, “There’s too much to do, and we’re running out of time. We need everyone there.” May Troop Meeting – Patrol leader elections will take place.
Plaque decorations (5-7-10)
We would ask for all scouts to bring your plaques to the May troop meeting so we can see your progress, and so we can share ideas with one another. Please plan on finishing the plaques for display at the shakedown. Each Scout received a plaque to decorate which will be hung on the gateway. Parents, I fear that the boys may need some motivation in tapping into their creative side of their brains. This plaque is intended to be an individual reflection of the scout. Let them share with all the other thousands of scouts at the jamboree who they are. Let me encourage you work with your sons so that they represent themselves well. Think of it as a warm up for a resume (in manner of speaking). Here are my thoughts on what they could add:
Name – Just the scout’s name written or etched with a wood burner tool & the edge has been sanded. Fair – Scout’s name, home troop number, name of school and hobbies Good – Scout’s name, home troop, school, hobbies, a picture of the scout and/or his family Excellent – Good (see above), plus add some type of trinkets and decorations that give the plaque character and further tells the story of just who he is. 3D objects should not protrude more than a few inches at most, and cannot have sharp edges that might poke or cut someone passing by. Please keep the design tasteful or we may ask to have it redone. Remember to weatherproof the plaque, and design it to withstand heavy winds.
Does your son need an ID for the Jamboree? (5-7-10)
NCDOCT will issue you an ID card up to age 15 for $10. See here for details. http://www.ncdot.org/DMV/other_services/general/pictureID.html Note *Picture ID required while at camp! You may also use a school ID, a driver's license, a passport card, or some other type of legal ID with the scout's picture on it.
Monday May10th is the absolute last day you canorder patches (updated 5-7-10)
*** Attention!!! Attention!!! *** This is it! We strongly encourage all scouts to order at least a handful of patches, because YOU WILL WANT TO TRADE when you get to the jamboree! Some patches might be available later, but they will be at a higher price! So get them now! The deadline for patch order has been extended a 2nd time! Scouts who want to order additional patches for trading now have until May 10 th (deadline has been extended…again). Please get your orders into the council office. DO NOT GIVE FORMS or money for patches to the Troop 1907 leaders!
OA Jamboree patch order information (5-7-10)
April 30th is the due date for orders for the OA lodge flap. Please get them into the council office on time. DO NOT GIVE FORMS or money for patches to the Troop 1907 leaders!
Foot/Storage locker recommendations (5-7-10)
It comes strongly recommended that each participant has a storage locker in which he can keep his valuables and personal items. The locker should be lockable, sturdy and waterproof. Walmart Contico Storage Locker $37 Beds, Bath & Beyond - Storage locker with wheels $69
I am considering converting a rubbermade tub into a footlocker for myself. If anyone is interested in the results I shall be happy to publish them to the group.
Gateway progress (updated 5-7-10)
We will be decorating the gateway at the Shakedown with different objects that represent North Carolina. These items need to be made out of lightweight material, sturdy enough to withstand high winds, and must have a way of attaching itself to our NC state cutout (such as screws or nuts/bolts). We will take volunteers to build these items. Assignments will be made at the May Troop meeting. You will have two weeks to build the object in preparation for the shakedown.
